Rukus Hoptimus Prime Double IPA: $5.49
Considering Hoptimus Prime’s aggressive balance of malts and hops and its slightly boozy finish, I’d call it above average. Considering its low price point, I’d call it a small miracle. It’s clear that some love went into making this 9.0% ABV Double IPA.
“You have to put quality ingredients into the beer — five hops and three malts — to make it a value,” said Ruckus Brewing Company’s vice president of operations Brad Mines. “We could cheapen it by using shortcuts, but we have not and we believe we have a great quality product for the price.” That value shines through when you taste the resinous grapefruit flavor of those five hop varieties ballasted by the hearty three-malt foundation of this brew.
About that price, Mines warns that it fluctuates state-to-state along the eastern seaboard where Hoptimus Prime is distributed, so it might be a little more expensive where you live. Regardless if it’s $5.49 or $6.49 a bottle, I’d still consider this one a steal.

Mark Hummel

Ruckus Brewing Company has enlisted the help of brewmaster Mark Hummel to ensure their beer recipes are not only brewed to perfection but with the same ingredients and proportions as when they were produced by Legacy Brewing Co. In fact, Hummel was the brewmaster for Legacy before the company exited the market. “I first developed a passion for quality beer while earning my Bachelor’s degree from Penn State” Hummel disclosed. He then traveled to California to pursue his passion and in 1997 graduated from the American Brewers Guild.

The spring of 1998 called Hummel back to his roots in the East where he joined the Flying Fish Brewing Co. and was trained in all aspects of the brewing process. After several years with Flying Fish, Hummel returned to his hometown outside of Reading, Pennsylvania to begin his brewing career at Legacy Brewing Co. while he earned his MBA at Penn State University. “I initially split my time between brewing and sales,” Hummel stated, “but eventually took over all brewing responsibilities”. Duties included brewing, filtering, recipe formulation, packaging, shipping and receiving and since the unfortunate close of the company, Hummel has moved on to a Regional Sales Manager position for Lion Brewery.

Hummel’s 13 plus years of experience in the brewing industry has proven to be an incredible asset to the Ruckus Brewing team in order to maintain the stellar reputation for quality and taste of their predecessors. With Mark advising at each step of the brewing process, it ensures the flavor and quality our customers expect will remain present in each of our products.
